No employee may be exposed above the noise exposure standard. To achieve this, the employer must first eliminate the noise source as far as reasonably practicable; failing that, cut exposure by quieter plant or processes, engineering controls, or both; then by administrative controls; and if exposure is still over the standard, supply hearing protectors that bring it within the standard, chosen after considering the nature and level of the noise, exposure duration and the systems of work (one selection may cover similarly exposed employees). If an elimination or engineering measure cannot reasonably be implemented within 6 months of deciding on it, the employer must write down the actions and timing (60/300 units), make it accessible to affected HSRs and employees (60/300 units), and consult directly affected employees on that decision (s 35(1)); this does not relax the duty to stay within the standard.
