If there are reasonable grounds for uncertainty about whether exposure is above, or could go above, the noise exposure standard, the employer is required to determine the employee's noise exposure. The determination must consider the noise level and how long the employee is exposed, the plant and other noise sources, the systems of work and other relevant factors, and must ignore any hearing protectors worn. Where several employees face identical sources and similar exposure, a representative determination on one or more of them may be used.
