The employer must first eliminate any risk from lead exposure as far as reasonably practicable. If that cannot be done, it reduces the risk, as far as reasonably practicable, by replacing lead with a less hazardous substance or a less hazardous form of lead, isolating the exposure source, applying engineering controls to cut exposure, or combining those. Any risk still left must then be prevented or reduced, as far as reasonably practicable, with administrative controls, and only what remains after that may be addressed with suitable personal protective equipment for employees at risk. Consultation with employees and any health and safety representative under Part 4 of the Act and r 21 applies. The duty supports sections 21 and 23 of the Act.
