Victoria Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 r132: r 132 Employer must directly supervise high risk work trainees

An employer whose employee is training toward a high risk work licence and is doing high risk work at the workplace is required to ensure the trainee gets directions, demonstrations and monitoring suited to the assigned tasks and the trainee's competence, so the work is done safely and without risks to health; that immediate action can be taken to fix any hazardous situation if an emergency involving the trainee arises; and that the trainee remains under direct supervision at all times. Direct supervision may be relaxed only when all three conditions hold: the circumstances of the particular task make it impracticable or unnecessary, the trainee's competence makes it unnecessary for that task, and lesser supervision will not put the trainee or anyone else at risk. The direct supervisor must hold the employer's authorisation to oversee the trainee and must hold a current, valid high risk work licence for the relevant class.
