US 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design 240: Play areas

What does 240 require?

Play areas for children aged two and up follow 240, each separate age-group area on its own, with exceptions for family child care in the provider's home, relocated existing components, amusement attractions and like-for-like replacement of components. One ground level play component of each type on an accessible route must meet 1008.4, and where elevated components exist the number and types of ground level components must satisfy Table 240.2.1.2 (one type for 2 to 4 elevated components, three types for 8 to 10, and so on); half the elevated components must be on an accessible route (a quarter where ramps reach half or more and transfer systems reach the rest); soft contained play structures need one accessible entry (two where four or more entries exist); and routes inside play areas meet 1008.2, including ground surfaces, transfer systems and ramp and platform rules.
