US 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design 206: Accessible routes

What does 206 require?

A minimum of one accessible route meeting Chapter 4 must link: site arrival points (parking, loading zones, public streets and sidewalks, transit stops) to the accessible entrance; the accessible buildings, facilities, elements and spaces across a site; the accessible entrance to every accessible space and element inside, including each storey and mezzanine (the private building elevator exemption for buildings under three storeys or under 3,000 square feet per storey applies here, but never to shopping centres, health care provider offices, transit facilities or airports, nor to Title II facilities and the other listed cases); and performance areas, wheelchair spaces, press boxes, and amusement, boating, golf and play components. The accessible route must run where the general circulation path runs or in the same area, interior routes may not divert through the outdoors where an interior path exists, a minimum of 60 percent of public entrances plus the listed parking, tunnel, walkway, garage, tenancy, restricted and service entrances must be accessible, security barriers may not block the route, and doors, doorways and gates on the route must meet 404 in the required numbers per room and space.
