Egress must satisfy the International Building Code's accessible egress provisions (2000 edition plus 2001 supplement, section 1003.2.13; or 2003 edition, section 1007): accessible egress routes in the number required for exits, refuge areas or horizontal exits where elevators or stairs form part of the way out, two-way communication at elevator landings, and signage. A platform lift may form part of the accessible egress where lifts are allowed on the accessible route, and it then needs standby power. Alterations need not add accessible egress, and detention, correctional and residential dwelling unit exceptions apply.
