US 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design 217-220: Telephones, transportation facilities, assistive listening systems, ATMs and fare machines

What does 217-220 require?

Public telephones: where installed, one per floor and per bank of each type must be wheelchair accessible (704.2), every public telephone needs volume control, and TTYs are required at the 217.4 ratios (for instance one TTY where a building has four or more public telephones, one in each public use area of hospitals, transit and airport terminals, stadiums and convention centres, and one per bank or floor in secured areas), with shelves and outlets at banks of three or more. Transportation facilities follow 218: bus boarding areas and shelters per 810, rail platforms and stations per 810 and 218.2 to 218.4 including detectable warnings, clocks and escalators, airport terminals per 810.9 and 810.10 TTYs and clocks. Assistive listening systems meeting 706 are required in every assembly area that has audio amplification, with receivers at the Table 219.3 counts and a share hearing-aid compatible; multiple assembly areas in one building under one management may pool the count. ATMs and fare machines: per location, one machine of every type must meet 707 (speech output, privacy, input controls), with one compliant drive-up unit where drive-up units exist.
