An employer takes general preventive measures, administrative and technical, to prevent contamination of the work environment or cut it as low as possible, or at least, where appropriate, to within the exposure limits the Commissioner gazettes. Hazardous substances are replaced by harmless or less harmful ones whenever possible; operations likely to contaminate the environment are isolated from the remaining premises so fewer people are exposed; processes where exposure to very hazardous substances is a significant risk are performed, so far as reasonably practicable, within enclosed systems preventing contact; direct contact is avoided by automatic processes or remote control where reasonably practicable; only properly authorised, adequately trained workers take part in dangerous operations and their training is refreshed at suitable intervals; and a worker who has to enter an atmosphere where a hazardous substance is present in harmful concentration is told fully about the hazards and is given, and wears, appropriate protective equipment.
