Sections 7 to 16: Policy and the general duties of employers, self-employed persons, manufacturers and suppliers, employees and chief executive officers – South Africa Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993

South Africa Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 13: Duty to inform: make every employee conversant with the hazards of their work, articles, substances, plant and machinery and the precautions to observe, inform representatives beforehand of inspections, investigations, inquiries and exemption applications, and inform them promptly of incidents

What does 13 require?

Every employer, as far as is reasonably practicable, ensures every employee knows the health and safety hazards attached to their work, to the articles and substances they make, process, use, handle, keep or move and to the plant and machinery they operate, together with the precautionary measures to be taken and observed. The employer also informs the relevant health and safety representatives beforehand of inspections, investigations and formal inquiries notified by an inspector and of any exemption application made under section 40, and tells a representative, as soon as reasonably practicable, about any incident in the workplace or section that representative is designated for.
