The SFHA, performed at the start of system development and re-evaluated whenever system functions change, systematically analyses system-level functions to identify and classify their failure conditions, judging what each does to the aircraft, its crew and the people on board while taking account of whether the crew would notice, the phase of flight and the environmental and operating conditions; the classifications set the system safety objectives. Its assumptions are captured and confirmed, and failure conditions may be tracked through development.
