The AFHA identifies and evaluates potential hazards of the aircraft's functions independent of design detail: aircraft-level functions are worked through methodically to find failure conditions, judge what each does to the aircraft, the crew and those on board, and give each a severity class; those classes become the aircraft's safety objectives. The assumptions behind the AFHA are recorded and later confirmed, and failure conditions and objectives may be tracked through development to check the design meets them.
