As soon as practicable after becoming aware, the head ensures an investigation is conducted and notifies the QFCC that it is under way with a contact person; if the head cannot reasonably investigate, the head notifies the QFCC with reasons (s 36(1), (2)). Before the investigation ends, the worker receives written notice of proposed adverse findings and may make written submissions within a reasonable stated period, which are considered in the report (s 36(3), (4)). If the conduct may be criminal, the head notifies police as soon as practicable, suspends or defers the investigation if the police commissioner asks, mitigates risks to children while doing so, and otherwise conducts it so as not to prejudice a police investigation (s 46).
