Prince Edward Island Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations P27-28: Demolition: compliance by the employer, bracing of damaged structures, pre-demolition precautions, glass removed, debris not endangering workers, supported hoisting equipment, independent scaffolds, protected exits, top-down sequence, no entry under falling material, load-relieved trusses, masonry in level courses, safe footing, chutes and debris lowering, fenced or backfilled basements, mechanical demolition rules, and powder-actuated tools to ANSI A10.3

What does P27-28 require?

The employer ensures compliance with Part 27. A previously damaged structure is braced or shored or demolished from a safe distance before work; demolition does not start until steps are taken to protect people in or near the project and adjoining property and the pre-demolition procedure of section 27.3 is complete; glass is removed first; material and debris are not stocked where they endanger workers; derricks and hoisting equipment are supported; scaffolds are self-supporting and independent of the part being demolished; every means of egress is protected from falling material; demolition works from the top of the structure downward except as section 27.9 allows; no worker enters where falling material could endanger them; trusses, girders and members are relieved of load and supported before disconnection; masonry walls come down in level courses and never in dangerous masses; nobody stands on a wall, pier or chimney without safe flooring or scaffolding within 3,660 mm; rubbish is lowered in containers or chutes built and curbed as sections 27.15 and 27.16 require and larger objects by crane or hoist; basements left after demolition are fenced or backfilled; and demolition by swinging weight, power shovel, bulldozer or explosive follows section 27.18. Powder-actuated fastening systems meet ANSI A10.3-2020.
