Subpart T: Demolition – OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926)

OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.859: 1926.859 Mechanical demolition

No workers may be in any area that demolition could affect while balling or clamming is being done, and at other times only those needed for the operation may be there. The demolition ball may weigh no more than 50 percent of what the crane is rated to lift at the boom length and maximum operating angle to be used, and no more than 25 percent of the suspension line's nominal breaking strength, whichever is the lesser value. The crane boom and load line must be kept as short as possible. The ball must hang from the load line on a swivel-type connection so the line does not twist, and be attached by positive means so it cannot accidentally come off. Before walls or parts of walls are pulled over, all steel members affected must already be cut free, and roof cornices and similar ornamental stonework must be removed first. A competent person must inspect continually as demolition progresses for hazards created by loosened material or by floors or walls that are weakened or deteriorated, and no employee may work where such hazards exist until shoring, bracing or other effective means correct them.
