Chapter 10: Protection and switchgear – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 10.31-10.48: Transformer rating, type, fire compartmentation and temperature monitoring

Transformer number and rating follow the distribution strategy, assumed maximum demand, fault level and prospective short-circuit current, limited to 2000 kVA. Fluid-filled transformers with more than 50 L of silicone oil should be in a 2-hour fire compartment (25 L for mineral oil and similar fluids); cast-resin units should be suitably enclosed and open-winding types need access precautions. Package substations may be considered with awareness that maintenance affects larger parts of the system. Transformer temperature monitoring should be considered.
