Chapter 10: Protection and switchgear – NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition)

NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) 10.1-10.16: HV switchgear selection, remote switching and emergency power off intertripping

Switchgear and protection types should follow the distribution strategy, especially for modifications. HV switchgear should suit the substation type; remote switching (lanyard or SCADA) should be considered; an emergency power off break-glass in the LV switchroom that intertrips the HV supply should be considered, carefully placed and protected, and agreed with the Group. Oil circuit breakers should be overhauled once they have cleared three faults and mineral oil disposed of properly; SF6 is a fluorinated greenhouse gas under strict leakage and handling rules. Selection should include life-cycle and maintenance cost and the fire implications of internal faults.
