NFPA 70 National Electrical Code 2023 Article 701 Legally Required Standby Systems 701.5: 701.5 Transfer equipment

Transfer switches operate automatically and carry a listing and marking for emergency or standby duty; meter-mounted switches are not allowed; bypass and isolation means are permitted if unintended paralleling is prevented; ATSs close electrically and latch mechanically; and the switch's short-circuit current rating is field marked on its exterior. One switch may carry standby loads of both kinds, legally required and optional, but emergency loads need their own.
