NFPA 111-2025 Standard on Stored Electrical Energy Emergency and Standby Power Systems 5.1: 5.1 Energy sources and battery installation

Permitted storage batteries suited to standby float service are lead-acid, NiCd, NiMH and lithium-ion; lead-acid, NiCd and NiMH may have free or immobilized electrolyte. Vented batteries go in rooms dedicated to batteries and their equipment, with approved ventilation, on open racks. Sealed and valve-regulated batteries may use dedicated battery rooms on open racks, in listed battery cabinets or in ESS cabinets, and when distributed in occupied spaces must be in listed ESS cabinets needing a tool or key, or in listed console or package units. Flywheels are placed in restricted equipment rooms or enclosures.
