A lawyer admitted in Minnesota may elect restricted status by written notice to the Director and is then excused from the educational and reporting requirements; referees, judicial officers of courts of record and lawyers employed as counsel for any employer, including state governmental units, cannot elect it. A lawyer on either form of restricted status may not practise law or represent anyone but themself in Minnesota (except as Rule 14 allows for emeritus lawyers), may not appear on firm letterhead without a note that the Minnesota licence is restricted (a firm name that already included the lawyer's name may keep it), may not be listed as of counsel or held out as able to take legal business, and may not own a financial stake in a professional-corporation law firm.
