First aiders should hold qualifications and experience and be ready to give initial care after a major incident, possibly at the evacuation point with only basic resources until the emergency services arrive. Responsibility for the injured carries on after handover to medical services: the organisation supports the individual and their family by knowing their whereabouts, facilitating family arrangements such as care and travel to hospital, managing psychological impacts and arranging longer-term support, and good practice sends a designated colleague to hospital with the casualty. A death is reported to the proper authorities and handled according to local custom; where deaths are a significant risk, plans should cover secure and fitting care of the deceased with regard to culture and religion; and top management should be made aware of fatalities and serious injuries so that communication and psychological support are coordinated.
