Clause 2.3: The seven quality management principles – ISO 9000:2015

ISO 9000:2015 2.3.6: Evidence-based decision making: decide on the analysis and evaluation of data and information

What does 2.3.6 require?

Statement: a decision that rests on analysed and evaluated data and information is more likely to give the result wanted. Rationale: deciding can be complex and always involves some uncertainty; it often draws on inputs of many kinds and from many sources, whose interpretation can be subjective, so it matters to understand cause and effect and the consequences that were not intended; facts, evidence and analysed data make decisions more objective and give more confidence in them. Likely benefits: better decision processes, better judgement of how processes perform and whether objectives can be met, better operational effectiveness and efficiency, a greater readiness to review, question and change views and decisions, and a greater ability to show that earlier decisions worked. Suggested actions: settle, measure and track the key indicators that show how the organisation performs; put all the necessary data in the hands of the people who need it; make sure data and information are accurate, reliable and secure enough; analyse and evaluate them with fitting methods; make sure the people who do so are competent; and decide and act on the evidence, tempered by experience and intuition.
