ISO 56002 7.8: Intellectual property management

What does 7.8 require?

The organization should set an approach to managing intellectual property that is in line with, and supports, the innovation strategy. It should consider: which IP assets to protect and which not, and when, how and where to do so (patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret, creative commons or open source licensing); why IP would be created, protected and used (value realization, freedom to operate, defence against infringement) and why it might not be protected (confidentiality, cost, speed, risk); setting up and keeping an inventory of intellectual assets; monitoring and analysing published IP that matters to the organization on a regular basis, both as an input to innovation and to keep freedom to operate and avoid infringing; the processes for managing IP, including settling ownership with external partners in collaborative initiatives and how IP is shared during idea generation; how value is realized from IP through licensing, cross-licensing, sale and partnerships; awareness and training on the approach, on ownership, on confidentiality and on what happens if third-party IP is infringed; granting or restricting access to IP for people inside and outside through policies, procedures and confidentiality agreements; how potential and actual infringement by others is handled; and tracking the relevant national and international legal requirements and compliance commitments.
