Governance exists, and the governing body is duty-bound, to set up the conditions that let the organization perform over the long run, fulfilling its purpose and creating the value intended. An organization contributes to sustainable development, and is itself sustainable, when it creates value in a way that satisfies today's needs without harming the prospects of future generations; by bringing governance into line with sustainable development (the UN SDGs, for example), governing bodies help lay the ground for future success. Governing bodies should therefore treat sustainable development and sustainability as central considerations when they govern and apply the principles.
