Clause 7: Integrating social responsibility throughout an organization – ISO 26000:2010

ISO 26000:2010 7.3.1: Due diligence

What does 7.3.1 require?

In social responsibility, due diligence is a thorough, forward-looking process for finding the actual and possible negative social, environmental and economic effects of what an organization decides and does, with the aim of avoiding and reducing them; it may involve influencing others found to be causing violations the organization is implicated in. The organization should take into account the context of the country, the actual and possible effects of its own activities, and the chance of harm arising from entities closely linked to it. Scaled to its size and situation, the process should include: policies on the relevant core subject that give real guidance to those inside the organization and those closely connected to it; ways to judge how current and planned activities bear on the aims of those policies; ways to embed the core subjects across the organization; ways to follow performance over time so priorities and approach can be adjusted; and suitable action on negative effects. It should try to see the challenges through the eyes of those who could be harmed, and it may try to move other entities, particularly those it is closely tied to, towards better social responsibility performance.
