ISO 26000:2010 6.7.8: 6.7.8 Consumer issue 6: Access to essential services

An organization supplying essential services (for example water, electricity, gas, sewerage, wastewater, drainage or communications) should: not cut off supply for non-payment before giving the consumer or consumer group a chance to ask for a reasonable period in which to pay, and not use disconnection of whole groups that punishes everyone whether or not they have paid; when setting prices and charges, offer where allowed a subsidised tariff for people in need; work openly and explain how its prices and charges are arrived at; extend coverage and give every consumer group the same standard and quality of service without discrimination; handle any rationing or interruption of supply fairly, without discriminating against any group; and keep its systems maintained and upgraded to help avoid service disruption.
