Clause 6.7: Consumer issues – ISO 26000:2010

ISO 26000:2010 6.7.4: 6.7.4 Consumer issue 2: Protecting consumers' health and safety

Paying particular attention to children and vulnerable groups, an organization should: supply products and services that are safe, when used normally or in ways that can reasonably be foreseen, for users and others, for their property and for the environment; judge whether the laws, regulations, standards and specifications on health and safety are adequate and exceed the minimum where evidence shows stricter requirements would protect people markedly better; if a product already on sale turns out to have an unforeseen hazard, a serious defect or misleading or false information, halt the service or pull the product from distribution, recall it using suitable measures and media, compensate consumers for their losses, and consider traceability measures along its value chain; reduce risk at the design stage by identifying user groups, intended use and foreseeable misuse and the hazards arising at each stage of use, estimating the risk for each group of users or people in contact, pregnant women included, and cutting risk first through designs that are safe in themselves, then protective devices, then user information; shape product information to suit consumers' differing needs and abilities; avoid harmful chemicals when developing products (those that cause cancer, damage genes or harm reproduction, or that persist and build up in organisms) and label clearly any product containing them; before introducing new materials, technologies or production methods, assess the risks of products and services to human health and make the documentation available; use symbols where possible to convey essential safety information; show consumers how to use products properly and warn them of risks from intended or foreseeable use; and take steps so products do not become dangerous through being handled or stored wrongly once consumers have them.
