Corruption means misusing entrusted power for private benefit and takes forms such as bribery, fraud, money laundering, embezzlement, concealment, obstructing justice and trading in influence. To prevent it, an organization should: identify where corruption could arise and put in place, and keep up, policies and practices against corruption and extortion; make sure its leaders model anti-corruption behaviour and give commitment, encouragement and oversight to its implementation; support and train employees and representatives in stamping out bribery and corruption, rewarding progress; raise understanding of corruption and how to resist it among employees, representatives, contractors and suppliers; make sure employees and representatives are paid appropriately and only for legitimate services; set up and maintain an effective anti-corruption system; urge its employees, representatives, partners and suppliers to report breaches of its policies and unethical or unfair treatment through channels that allow reports to be made and followed up without fear of retaliation; report breaches of criminal law to the police or other enforcement bodies; and resist corruption by encouraging those it has operating relationships with to adopt similar practices.
