Improving overall performance should be a standing objective of the organization (ISO 9000:2015 clause 2.3.5), with the continual improvement cycle based on Plan-Do-Check-Act (ISO 9001:2015 clause 0.3.2). Each of the two organizations, originating and project, is responsible for continually looking for ways to make the processes they own more effective and efficient. So that experience is learned from, project management should be treated as a process and not as an isolated task, and there should be a process for recording and analysing what is learned during a project so it feeds continual improvement (ISO 9001:2015 clause 10.3). Self-assessments (ISO 9004), internal audits and any required external audits (ISO 9001:2015 clauses 9.2 and 9.3) should be provided for to find improvement opportunities, allowing for the time and resources they take. Lessons and information from earlier projects should be studied and put to use in improving current and future projects.
