Every month the lawyer produces a list of the individual client ledger balances and a three-way reconciliation that ties the bank statement balance to the journal balance and to the total of the client ledger balances. Copies of these monthly reconciliations are retained, as are the portions of client files that bear on trust account transactions. Together they let an examiner prove that the bank holds exactly what the ledgers say is owed to clients.
