Hong Kong Design Manual: Barrier Free Access 2008 (2025 Edition) D20: Escalators and passenger conveyors: safety requirements and tactile warning strips

What does D20 require?

Escalators and passenger conveyors are not part of a barrier-free route, so adequate warning or guarding must protect persons with visual impairment alongside and at each end of them. Tactile warning strips are required at both the bottom and the top of every escalator and at both ends of every passenger conveyor, laid out as the Division and figures specify, and an accessible lift or ramp must therefore serve the same floors as the accessible means of vertical travel. The Best Practice Section covers audible warnings and contrasting step edges.
