EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management
Part 264 Subpart B: General facility standards – EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management

EPA RCRA Hazardous Waste Management 264.18: § 264.18 Location standards

Portions of new facilities where hazardous waste will be treated, stored or disposed of must not be within 61 metres (200 feet) of a fault with displacement in Holocene time. A facility in a 100-year floodplain (land with a one percent or greater annual chance of flooding) must be designed, built, operated and maintained to prevent washout of hazardous waste by a 100-year flood, unless it shows the Regional Administrator that procedures will remove the waste safely before flood waters arrive or, for existing surface impoundments, waste piles, land treatment units, landfills and miscellaneous units, that washout would cause no adverse effects considering the waste volume and characteristics, constituent concentrations reaching surface waters, their effect on water uses and quality standards, and effects on sediments and floodplain soils. Placing non-containerized or bulk liquid hazardous waste in any salt dome, salt bed formation, underground mine or cave is prohibited, except the Department of Energy Waste Isolation Pilot Project.
