A building or part of a building is classified by the purpose for which it is designed, constructed or adapted to be used, and each part must comply with the requirements for its own classification, subject to a concession where a different-purpose part is 10% or less of a storey's floor area (unless that part is a laboratory, a Class 9b early childhood centre, or a Class 2, 3 or 4 part) (A6G1). The classes within Volume One's scope are: Class 2, a building of two or more sole-occupancy dwelling units (A6G3); Class 3, residential accommodation for unrelated persons such as boarding houses, hotel/motel residential parts, aged or disability care, or school residential parts (A6G4); Class 4, a single dwelling within a Class 5 to 9 building (A6G5); Class 5, an office building (A6G6); Class 6, a shop or building supplying goods or services direct to the public (A6G7); Class 7, a carpark (7a) or a wholesale storage/display building (7b) (A6G8); Class 8, a process or production building (A6G9); and Class 9, a public-nature building: health care including residential care (9a), assembly including school trade workshops or laboratories (9b), or residential care (9c) (A6G10).
