Section 3: Controlling risks from purchase to disposal – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 3.9: 3.9 Decommission, dismantle and dispose of plant safely

A person with management or control of plant should follow the same procedures as for installation to identify physical and psychosocial hazards in decommissioning and dismantling, for example exposure to hazardous substances, and dismantle plant to the designer's and manufacturer's instructions. Disposal may be resale, scrapping, waste disposal or recycling. A seller of plant takes on supplier duties and should ensure the plant is safe to load, transport, unload and store, and provide design, registration, installation, operation and maintenance information with it. Plant to be scrapped should be made safe to load, transport, unload and dispose of in consultation with recycling or waste authorities. Plant supplied for scrap or spare parts must be notified in writing or marked as not to be used as plant.
