When plant is hired both the hirer and the person it is hired from must ensure so far as reasonably practicable that the plant is safe to use, and during the hire the hirer controls how it is used. Before hiring assess whether the plant suits the task (for example a vehicle suitable for rough terrain, regularly serviced and well maintained, secure with central locking, locatable with tracking and lit so the driver can see passengers) and check the supplier inspected and maintained it to the manufacturer's specification, for example through the logbook, and provided the manufacturer's information on purpose and proper use. A person who hires plant out has duties as a supplier and as a person with management or control. Usually the supplier inspects and maintains it, but for long hires the parties can agree arrangements and, if the hirer maintains it, give maintenance records back at the end.
