Plant must be maintained and repaired to the manufacturer's specification, and if specifications are deficient the manufacturer should be contacted. Plant should usually be isolated before maintenance or cleaning, and isolated or disengaged plant should not hinder other plant, should have guards in place where there is a risk and should not obstruct access. A process should enable communication and consultation with affected workers and other businesses so restarting after shut-down creates no risk. Where plant cannot be isolated, methods to prevent accidental operation and controlled procedures should be used. If plant must run during maintenance or cleaning, operator controls must (r 210) permit operation while a person is maintaining, cannot be operated by anyone other than that person, or if another person must operate it only an authorised person can, and allow operation that eliminates or minimises risk. All guarding must be replaced before use, and damaged plant that poses a risk should be withdrawn from service until controlled.
