Section 3: Controlling risks from purchase to disposal – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 3.4b: 3.4 Control alterations to plant and register altered designs

Before altering plant, consult the designer and manufacturer so all safety issues are considered. If the original designer or manufacturer implements the alteration their obligations still apply; if the person with management or control alters it they also take on designer and manufacturer obligations. If the original designer cannot be contacted, for older or imported plant, the alteration should be done by a competent person to the relevant technical standards. If the plant design is subject to registration the altered design must be registered where the alteration may affect health and safety. Plant should be isolated from power and unable to start accidentally during alteration. Before return to service put in place controls for the risks the alteration creates, give users and supervisors information and training on the changes, and inspect and test the plant against the altered design specification and standards.
