If the person with management or control intends to alter the plant design, change how it is used or change a system of work, the risk management process should be carried out again. If the plant will be used differently or for a purpose it was not designed for, a competent person must assess the risks of the new use, for example when a wood cutting machine will cut metal. The assessment should cover all aspects of the task, explain why a purpose-designed item cannot be used, take account of the designer's, manufacturer's and supplier's recommendations and the plant's capabilities, identify differences from purpose-designed plant and the measures that will control the risks it was designed to control, and amend operator and maintenance manuals and signage. If the competent person finds the plant unsuitable it must not be used for the task.
