Vertical anchorage lines or rails give continuous fall protection when climbing ladders or towers, including tower cranes. Systems should comply with AS/NZS 1891 with a suitable harness within its use-by date; the locking device should attach to the harness front point with a lanyard assembly of no more than 300 mm; the connection point should be near the ladder base so the climber connects before ascending and stays connected to a safe disconnection point above; free fall should be limited to 600 mm; and permanent systems should be wire or rail installed to the manufacturer's instructions. After a fall the system should be removed from service and inspected by a competent person before reuse.
