Hazards of building shafts include cramped dimensions and possible confined space work, unstable ground when spoil is lifted out, falls and objects falling, including water and fine material off the shaft wall, winches, ropes, hooks and other hoisting gear, hoisting or winching of people, plant, spoil and materials, dewatering and water in-flow or in-rush, ventilation and airborne contaminants, hazardous materials, manual tasks, explosion or fire, poor communications, mobile plant, noise, and emergency exits. Controls include stabilising the ground at the shaft head, removing spoil, lining or supporting the shaft continuously, temporary work platforms for fall protection, supplying and maintaining hoisting gear, dewatering, mechanical ventilation, isolating moving parts of plant, guiding working platforms and material, not overfilling kibbles and cleaning them before lifting, shutting shaft doors before tipping, and cleaning spillage off doors, stage and steelwork.
