Bulldozers, scrapers, excavators and other earthmoving plant are commonly used to prepare work areas or dig the trench itself. Some trenches need manual work such as hand trimming, which can often be done from outside by shovelling or pushing material with a long-handled tool to the trench floor, where the excavation plant can collect it. The risks from falls and from working around powered mobile plant must be controlled.
