The tunnel design should draw on the investigation and the expected excavation methods and include the tunnel's dimensions and permitted excavation tolerances, the temporary and permanent support and lining needed at each location, expected drive lengths and shaft locations, and any other requirements the completed tunnel must meet. Under WHS Regulation 295 designers must give the PCBU that commissioned the design a written report of the hazards of the tunnel design that, so far as they are reasonably aware, create risks for people doing construction work on the tunnel and arise only from that design rather than others of the same type. The design should record the excavation methods and ground conditions assumed, so it can be reviewed if the method changes or the ground differs, and should allow for safe construction.
