Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 5.1a: 5.1 Secure trenches at least 1.5 metres deep from unauthorised entry (WHS Regulation 306)

Under WHS Regulation 306, a PCBU that proposes digging a trench 1.5 metres or more deep has to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that nobody can get into the work area without authority, including by accident, by securing it.
