Controls for falls into excavations include: the support system itself, such as trench sheets or trench box extensions projecting above the trench (Figure 6); trench shields fitted with covers or guard rails (Figure 7); guard rails and toe-boards set into the ground right beside the supported side; scaffold towers or landing platforms within deep excavations; ladders secured to trench shields; effective barriers or barricades; clearly marked pedestrian detours; alternative access and exit points for emergencies; and backfilling as work proceeds. A fall prevention device is material, equipment or both that prevents a fall during temporary work at height and, once installed, needs no ongoing adjustment, alteration or operation to stay effective, for example covers, working platforms, edge protection and secure fencing.
