Excavation cannot be done safely unless the plant suits the work and is kept in good condition. Plant may include powered mobile plant, jackhammers, air compressors, hydraulic jacks, electric generators, oxyacetylene sets for welding or gas cutting, ladders, scaffolding, and handheld tools such as picks, shovels, hammers and pinch or lever bars. Whoever manages or controls the plant should make sure a competent person uses and operates it, has its guarding and operator protective devices in place, displays its safe working load, has working load measurement devices, sits on ground prepared for it (particularly uneven ground), and is maintained following the instructions of the manufacturer or supplier or the relevant Australian Standards.
