Section 4: Controlling risks in excavation work – Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work

Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 4.3c: 4.3 Run earthmoving machinery and haul roads safely near excavations

Bulldozers and scrapers often prepare the area, bulldozers pushing material short distances and sometimes ripping hard sedimentary rock, and scrapers hauling large volumes quickly over long distances; given their output and speed, careful attention should be paid to job layout, haul roads, vehicle paths and traffic management. Temporary haul roads should be well built and maintained so operators can work safely. Large machinery such as bulldozers should not work close to an overhang or deep excavation, because its weight may cause the sides to fail, and plant should come up to embankments or trenches crosswise rather than running alongside them.
