Workers must be trained and hold the skills to do each task safely, and training should come from a competent person. A competent person must also deliver training tailored to the particular excavation and site, in addition to general construction induction (WHS Regulation 317; the construction work code covers induction in its Chapter 6). Workers who operate certain types of plant must hold a valid licence for that plant. Supervisors, for example a foreman or leading hand, should have excavation training and experience so they can make sure the work follows the SWMS.
