Before excavation work starts, a person with management or control of the workplace must take all reasonable steps to obtain current underground essential services information for the workplace and adjacent areas, provide it to anyone engaged to carry out the excavation, and keep it readily available for inspection until the excavation is completed, or for 2 years after a notifiable incident connected with it; those given the information must have regard to it in carrying out or directing the work (WHS Regulations r 304). Builder and excavation subcontractor should agree who obtains it, and the builder should check subcontractors understand it before digging.
