Schedule 1 Alternative compliance accreditation, fatigue (requirements 2 to 10) – Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026

Australia Heavy Vehicle National Law Safety Management System Standard 2026 S1-4: ACA fatigue, operating limits: limits designed for the operator's fatigue risk profile and context, accounting for task demands, recovery, cumulative fatigue and time of day, monitored and reviewed for continued suitability, with controlled and justified exceedances supported by countermeasures, and work and rest records reviewed for compliance

What does S1-4 require?

Operating limits are what distinguish ACA fatigue: rather than resting on prescriptive hours alone, the limits are built around the particular fatigue risks of the operator's work, allowing for the nature and length of tasks, the recovery periods needed, cumulative fatigue across sequences of work, and the way time of day affects fatigue and sleep. Approved limits are watched and reviewed as operations change, and any exceedance in defined circumstances happens inside a controlled framework with countermeasures and oversight. Five things are looked for: limits reflect the applicant's own fatigue risk profile and operating context; they allow for task demands, recovery, cumulative fatigue and time of day; they are monitored and reviewed so they stay suitable; exceedances are controlled, justified and backed by countermeasures; and work and rest records are checked to confirm compliance with the approved limits.
