Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017
Part 4: categories of premises and the standards of direction, control and supervision (sections 17 and 18) – Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017

Australia Health Insurance (Accredited Pathology Laboratories, Approval) Principles 2017 18(4)-(6): Supervise pathology testing only within the designated person's scope of practice and delegate section 18 responsibilities only as the Supervision Requirements (Eighth Edition 2025) allow, with the scope-of-practice limit relaxed only for a category S laboratory testing in a workforce-shortage discipline

What does 18(4)-(6) require?

The designated person may supervise pathology testing only within his or her own scope of practice; testing outside it must be supervised by someone with the relevant scope under a delegation. The designated person's section 18 responsibilities may be delegated, but only in accordance with the Requirements for Supervision in the Clinical Governance of Medical Pathology Laboratories (Eighth Edition 2025). The scope-of-practice requirement in subsection 18(1)(c) and the limit in subsection 18(4) do not apply to the designated person of a category S laboratory that renders testing in a pathology discipline with a national workforce shortage, and for the same premises Schedule 1 clause 2 applies the Requirements for Medical Pathology Services (Third Edition 2018) as if its definition of designated person made no reference to relevant scope of practice.
